You may have seen yogurt in the store and wondered how it is made and how hard it is to make. Well, today we will give you those answers with DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt.
Making DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt is really very easy but it does take a couple of days and a bit of equipment.
The most important thing to remember is to use the correct starter. No one wants to add the wrong bacteria to their yogurt starter and have rotten milk instead of yogurt.
To make DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt:
1. Milk
2. Starter Bacteria
3. Container
4. Strainer
5. Strainer Cloth
Now, you can buy a cute little machine that makes yogurt for you. These machines come in all kinds of price ranges with all kinds of bells and whistles. The instructions are very simple: add milk, add the starter, turn the machine on, and wait a few hours then you have yogurt.
The process for making DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt is not that different when doing it by hand.
1. Heat the milk to around 150 degrees but do not boil.
2. Let the milk cool then add the bacteria starter.
We use plain yogurt bought from the grocery. This is most important, as we said. You can buy starter that has been dehydrated and powdered but you can use yogurt. Make sure to use the live bacteria yogurt. If there is no bacteria to “grow” the yogurt then you will just have hot milk.
3. Leave the mix out on the counter. Do not put it in the fridge yet.
Once the yogurt mix goes into the fridge, it will stop the process and you will only get what you have at this point.
4. Now you just wait.
It will take a day or two for the yogurt process to finish.
5. Strain your yogurt to get the whey out and make the yogurt a more solid consistency.
At this point the yogurt can be put into a bag to let the whey drip out. Or if you are using a yogurt machine, the strainer is in the machine.
We have used both processes and it seems to come out about the same. This process may also take from a few hours to a day to let all of the whey drip out.
6. Put yogurt yogurt in a container and into the fridge.
And there you have made DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt.
Of course, you can add flavoring, jelly, nuts, fruit, or whatever you want to spruce up your homemade Yogurt.
If you want to make sour cream, the process is the same but you will want to leave the yogurt out a couple more days to get there.
Making cream cheese is the same process but it needs to be drained of most of the whey to get the cream cheese consistency.
It is possible to leave your mix out too long but as long as you started with the correct bacteria and kept it covered, you should be good.
So go ahead and try making DIY Homemade Plain Yogurt, it is easy and healthy.
