So keep your leather gear happy this winter. Make sure all of your leather boots, jackets, gloves, and hats are winter ready with this DIY leather conditioner recipe.
This recipe is fairly quick and easy to make. But there is some melting and mixing required so it may not be a suitable project for the kids to help out with.
It only requires three ingredients and a bit of stovetop heat to keep your leather gear happy and healthy this winter.
With this DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer Recipe you can get leather conditioning, a quick polish, and water-resistant sealing for your leather gear all in one sitting.
To make your own DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, Sealer Recipe you will need:
stove top, and melting pot
a tin
beeswax
castor oil
olive oil
As we have mentioned many times before, we recycle, upscale, and reuse everything we can. In this case, we use old tin cans as our product tins. As long as you use the safety can opener, we have talked about this in several other talks, you can use any size can you have on hand.
We have three slightly different recipes for this DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer Recipe. We have tried all the ways and different people like it in different ways. So you can see which one you like to use for yourself.
Recipe One:
½ cup beeswax
¾ cup castor oil
½ cup olive oil
Steps to make your DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer
1. In a melting pot on the stovetop melt the beeswax.
2. Add the castor oil and mix well to blend.
3. Add the olive oil. When you add the olive oil, it will do an odd solidifying at first.
That is ok, not sure why it does that but it does. Just stir to melt and mix the olive oil with the other liquids.
4. Once all the ingredients are well blended, take the pot off the heat and let it cool a bit. Then pour your mix into the prepared tin.
This recipe gives you a nice, softish polish.
To Use:
With a cloth, apply a small amount to your leather item, boots, jacket, or whatever. Gently massage the leather conditioner into the leather. Wait a bit for the oils to soak into the leather, then polish with a clean cloth.
It is, of course, best to start with clean, dry items but if you are like us, our work boots are never really clean. In this case, brush off as much dirt and stuff as possible before you apply the polish.
For our cloth, we have a white rag, very likely someone’s old shirt, or an old, dead sock to polish with.
We use one to apply the paste and another clean one to polish with.

Recipe Two:
¼ cup beeswax
½ cup castor oil
¼ cup olive oil
Steps:
The steps here are the same as with recipe one. The only difference is the ratios of oils and wax.
This will give you a thick toothpaste consistency. This is stiffer than a cream but still easy enough to use.
To Use:
With a cloth, apply a small amount of leather conditioner to your leather item, boots, jacket, or whatever. Gently massage the paste into the leather. Wait a bit for the oils to soak into the leather, then polish with a clean cloth.
If you are old school and you prefer a harder polish, then recipe three is for you.
DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer
Recipe Three:
1/4 cup castor oil
3/4 cup beeswax
¼ cup olive oil
Steps:
Steps one thru three are the same as with recipe one. The only difference is the ratios of oils and wax.
However, step four is different and very important.
Take your mix off the stovetop. Pour the hot liquid mix directly and quickly into your tin. Do not wait long or the mix will be solid in your melting pot. If this happens reheat and melt it again. Then pour it into the tin quickly.
This will give you an old-fashioned hard polish similar to the old, melt-and-polish wax. It is best to heat it slightly to soften the paste. Then you can use it more easily. This is for those who like to use a good bit of elbow grease. It is easier to polish this mix with an old brush like one uses for shoe polish or rough rag.
As with all leather conditioners, you may need to reply from time to time depending on what torment you put your leather gear through.
If you are gentle with your leather gear, you may only need to use this DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer Recipe once or twice a year.
But if you are hard on your gear, work outdoors all day, and generally wear out your leather gear, you may need to reapply once a month or so.
The frequency of use depends on how hard you are on your leather wears.
