We continue our talk on the Arrowroot plant. Last week we talked about how to grow your own arrowroot plants for home use.  This week we offer some cooking substitutes and some DIY recipes using arrowroot powder.

The Arrowroot is normally used when dried and powdered. Of course, commercially make arrowroot powder is a bit finer than homemade powder. But the point of homemade is not to have to use commercially made.

Having grown, dug, harvested, dried, and ground the arrowroot, we are ready to put it to use. If you keep up with our talks, you know we try to be as self-sufficient as possible. This included growing plants to make ingredients for DIY projects and recipes. Arrowroot can be used for so many different things, we are not sure why everyone does not grow it.

You can, of course, buy Arrowroot in bulk and not grow the plant to make your own powder. As we have said, our Arrowroot plants are young and we do not have a large enough supply to harvest yet. Sometimes we buy our Arrowroot powder in bulk from StarWest.

You can also buy Bob’s Red Mill Arrowroot powder from Boxed. At some point, we hope to have a good supply of Arrowroot so we can harvest our own but for now, we buy what we need.

Here are some of the things one can do with Arrowroot powder.

Recipe One:
We did a talk some months ago on DIY homemade natural flea powder with essential oils. Arrowroot is the main ingredient in this flea powder.

Recipe Two:
Another talk we did sometime back was on How to DIY homemade Deodorant Powder Dust. This is another common use for Arrowroot.

Recipe Three:
DIY natural ingredient body powder was another recipe in which we used Arrowroot powder. This recipe uses Arrowroot powder as a substitute for cornstarch.

For most any recipe that calls for corn starch, Arrowroot powder can be substituted. This is true for DIY personal care recipes. For people that have issues with baking soda, you can increase the amount of arrowroot powder in the recipe and decrease the amount of baking soda.

In many cooking recipes, Arrowroot can be substituted for flour. There is a whole world for cooking recipes you can get online using arrowroot powder. Arrowroot is naturally gluten-free for those that have grain issues. Again, Arrowroot can be substituted, usually one for one, for cornstarch in most cooking recipes.

Arrowroot can be used as a replacement ingredient for baking powder in cooking.
Baking powder replacement recipe:
1 cup baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon arrowroot powder

Just like regular baking powder, this will last a good while in a sealed container.

Egg Replacement:
1 Tablespoon Arrowroot powder
1 Tablespoon veg oil
1/4 cup of water
whisk together and cook the mix as you would an egg.
This is a helpful recipe if you run out of eggs or if you have an egg allergy.

You can make cookies, cakes, muffins, and all kinds of baking goods using Arrowroot instead of flour. This is a great alternative for those with gluten issues.

Overall, Arrowroot powder is a great ingredient for cooking and DIY projects. Arrowroot may not be a common item in many households but it should be.

We are sure there are many more recipes but we leave you to your own research. Please do check out Arrowroot and all its possibilities. If growing for pleasure or use, Arrowroot is a wonderful plant. We hope you have enjoyed this talk and have learned something from it.
