So, here we have a bit of an odd one for you. This can be considered both a craft and a recipe. How to make homemade blue glowing “spotchka”.

If you smile, you know what that is and you are already wanting to try to make your own “spotchka”. You may even have thought about it but did not know how to make “spotchka” yourself. If you do not know what “spotchka” is, we will explain.

We recently watched the Mandalorian series. The whole family for several generations has been Star Wars fans so we thought it time to check out the new series, WE LOVED IT.

But we should have learned from past years and past experiences. If you give the kids a new experience and they take to it, you will have to “do things” like the movies did. When we saw “The Ice Princes”, we had to go ice skating. That was painful as none of us knew how to ice skate. But we took the kid to the ice rink, we still do not know how to ice skate but it was a fun and funny family outing. When we saw “The Transporter” movie we had to learn to make Madeleine cookies. We still make Madeleines from time to time. When we saw “Alice in Wonderland” we had to buy a tea set and have English afternoon tea, and yes we still do that from time to time. When we saw “Ratatouille” we had to make that dish from the movie, not real fans of that. Anyway, the point is, when you have a new experience, you want to try out new things.

So back to The Mandalorian series. After watching the series and loving it, what do we need to do but make “spotchka”? For those of you who have not yet seen The Mandalorian series, we recommend you do. It is a very good Star Wars series, cute, fun, and family-friendly. “Spotchka” is a blue, glowing drink that the characters drink. In the series, “spotchka” is made from some blue glowing shrimp-looking things and it seems to be alcoholic in nature. Of course, the “spotchka” we made, did not contain any alcohol as it had to be kid-safe.

Okay, sure, how hard can that be? Well, in fact making a glowing blue liquid is not hard at all. But, oh yeah, let’s be able to drink it too. That is a bit harder to do.

So here is the saga of How to Make Homemade Blue Glowing Spotchka.

First, what beverage to use? We thought of Kool-aid but we do not usually like or drink Kool-aid. We thought, what about one of those blue energy drinks? But the same issue, we do not drink those kinds of things.

So we decided on Ginger-Ale and Sprite. Both of these give us a drink we like and normally would drink. They also both give you cool bubbles. Also, you know we are health conscious so Ginger-Ale and Sprite are 2 “sodas” that have less sugar, preservatives, and fake stuff than most.

This picture shows a bottle of Ginger Ale and a bottle of Sprite.

Next, making it blue is a no-brainer, just add a few drops of blue food coloring. This way you are also in control of how much coloring you have in your drink.

This picture shows a bottle of blue food coloring.

And of course how to make it glow. Well, here is the big hitch. We did some research and that is no “natural” way to make your drink glow. There are several “unnatural” ways to make liquid glow but then you can not drink it. So we had to go with a mechanical way.

It is of an interesting note, tonic water glows blue under a black light. You can use tonic water and a black light for a quick blue glow but it only is good as long as your “drink” is under the black light. If you take your “drink” away from the black light, you have a blue drink but no glow. Also, not everyone likes the taste of tonic water. And the whole point of this was to get a cool glowing drink.

So we found that you could easily use a glass bottle and drop a few blue glow sticks into the bottle but you can see the glow sticks in the bottle. You can use a bottle with a cork for the flask. Core out part of the cork and add a small l.e.d. light to the cork. It is best to use a clear bottle with no writing on it to get the best glowing effect. Either way makes the flask glow and it is cool.

As for the single-drink glasses, that was a bit more interesting. You can buy lighted ice cubes from specialty stores but we do not have any on hand and did not want to buy them just for this occasion. We thought of glow sticks or light balls. But what if someone forgets and swallows the glow stick or light ball? Those things are not very big, that could happen, and then a trip to the E.R., not an ideal family fun day.

If you have read any of our other talks, you may have seen the crafty side of the family. We hand-make many things and luminaries are one of those things. We have these little, tea light candles to use in the luminaries. The ones we normally use are not suited for use in liquids. But we found some fake tea lights that are sealed for use in water displays. We bought ours at the Dollar Tree.

This picture shows a package of water safe tea lights. This is used in floral arrangements and the like. Here is it used to make the blue glow in out talk on How to Make Homemade Blue Glowing Spotchka.
This picture shows two water-safe tea lights.

It is also to be noted if you have a clear glass with a deep inset in the outside bottom, you can just use any tea light or light ball. You can use clear tape to tape the light into the inset at the bottom of the glass and there is your light glow. Just add your blue drink and that is all there is to it. But if you do not have a glass with the proper inset bottom, you will need to be more imaginative about it.

So we now have a safe way to make the drinks glow. The tea lights are large enough not to be swallowed and safe for use in water or in our case Sprite and Ginger-Ale.

So now that we had a plan, we set to making our “spotchka”.

1. Get you a really cool looking bottle.

2. Really cool-looking space-style glasses.

I think our glasses were originally Scooby Doo jelly jars.

3. Sprite or Ginger-Ale to your taste.

4. A few drops of blue food coloring.

5. Drop a water-safe tea light into the bottom of the glass.

Add a few ice cubes to camouflage the light.

6. Pour the blue liquid into the glasses.

And there you have “spotchkas” all around.

Be sure to wash the glasses, glow sticks, and tea lights well before you use them. And of course, be sure you get the water-safe tea lights. The package will say waterproof. Most of the time, this kind of tea light is used for water flower arrangements.

On another note, our tea lights were color-changing so that gave us some really cool colors, not just the “spotchka blue”. That was an unexpected bonus.

This was a bit of a head-scratcher to figure out how to make it drinking safe but it was fun.
