You can make the cayenne-infused oil, stop there and use that as a muscle rub if you like. But the Cayenne muscle rub salve is easier to handle and control. It also may be too hot to use straight.
First off, we must advise you to be careful with Cayenne. It is a great herbal remedy if used properly and with proper care. But if you mishandle Cayenne, you can get a nasty burn or cause yourself a great deal of pain.
This is NOT a good project to involve the kids in. There are so many ways that can go wrong.
And, of course, keep this oil away from your children and pets.
We did a talk a bit ago, Why You Get Headaches and Using Natural Remedies and Techniques to Stop Them. In this talk, we mentioned a Cayenne Pepper Muscle Rub as one of the natural remedies you can use to soothe a headache.
This is the recipe that we use. It does take a bit of wait time. So if you want to try this Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil or Homemade Cayenne Pepper Muscle Rub Recipe, start it before you will want to be using it.
Part One: Making Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil.
You will need:
Clean jar
Cayenne (dried)
Carrier Oil of your choice
1. Cayenne (dried)
Always use dried herbs and spices if you are making a concoction with oils. If you use fresh herbs and spices, there will be some moisture in them and this can cause your oil to grow mold. No one wants a moldy massage oil.
2. Carrier Oil
You can use olive oil, sweet oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil, almond oil, or really whatever oil you like best. Some oils will be heavier or more “oily” but the choice is yours as to which you use. Do note some oils may cause acne breakouts or allergic reactions in some so be sure you test first.
We used Almond Oil for this Cayenne Infused Oil. Honestly, we started to use sweet oil but we were out. So we decided to use Grape Seed Oil but again we found we were out. So Almond Oil it is. That is one of the best things about making your own herbal concoctions, you can change things around and tweak the recipes to suit your personal needs or likes.
3. A clean jar
Always start with a clean glass jar. It is best to have one jar to use ONLY for that recipe, every time. But if you reuse jars, make sure, if you had used this jar for other recipes, that it is very clean and has no residue from the last recipe.
It is always a reused glass jar for us. Just about every glass jar and bottle that comes into the house is saved for “later use”. So we have plenty of sizes and shapes to choose from.
The Two Methods of Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil
Now there are two ways to do this, the fast and the slow.
It is generally considered best to use the longer, slower method to get the most out of your herbs. But if time is an issue, the faster method will work just fine.
A. The Slow Method:
1. Put the cayenne pepper and carrier oil in the clean jar.
Again, dried cayenne pepper and the carrier oil of our choice.
2. Put the lid on and sit it in a sunny window for 4 to 6 weeks.
Give it a gentle shake every few days.
3. Strain off when ready.
We use a clean jar, a funnel, and a straining cloth. The top oil will pour off quickly but the oil that is in the pepper will take some time to drain out. It seems to work best to turn the jar up on top of the funnel and let gravity do its thing. Do be careful to put this setup in a place where it will not be bothered or knocked over. You do not want your infused oil or leftovers spilled everywhere.
You can see that lovely red color in the finished Cayenne Infused Oil.
It would seem obvious but just in case it is not, Keep the oil and discard the used pepper. We have not found any good use for the leftover pepper after we strain off the oil for use. We do add it to the mulch bucket, of course.
4. Store in a dark, cool place til you need it.
In general, we keep ours in the kitchen pantry. It is dark, cool, and easy to get to. Also, everyone knows that is where it is kept in case they need it.
5. Use for whatever herbal concoction you are making.
This is the generally used method for infusing most all herbs into an oil base. Although it takes some weeks to finish, this method is easy and requires little prep or tools.
As mentioned before, always use dry herbs and spices if you are making an infusion with oil. You do not want any liquid in your oil that could cause it to spoil or grow mold.
B. The Fast Method:
You will need:
Cayenne Pepper (dried)
Carrier Oil
Clean Jar
Crock Pot or double boiler
Pot Holder or Towel
Water
This method will need to be watched carefully while it is “cooking”.
1. This method starts out the same. Put the dried cayenne pepper and oil in a clean jar. Give it a good shake to mix.
But here is where the fast part comes in.
2. Put a pot holder or towel in the bottom of the crock pot.
3. Put the jar with the Cayenne and oil in the crock pot on the pot holder. This will keep the glass jar from coming in direct contact with the crock pot.
4. Fill the crock pot with water to about 2 inches from the top of the jar.
The amount of water depends on the size of both your crock pot and the jar you are using. A general guess will usually do. Do not fill to the top of the jar or you may get some water leaking into the jar. Water in the oil will make your oil go off the shelf quickly.
5. Crock on low for four to eight hours.
Again, the time is a general guess. You want to leave the oil on the heat long enough to get all the “goodie” out of the dried Cayenne pepper. But do not leave it so long that it starts to dry out or gets scalded.
Do not let the water evaporate, you must keep the water level steady. But in general, you will not leave the crock pot on long enough for this to happen. Just be aware that is possible.
If you want to skip the crock pot and go with the double boiler, the method is basically the same. Put the jar and water in the double boiler, and cook on low heat for several hours. This you must watch carefully to avoid bunt oil, overflowing or the water level getting too low.
We have not tried the double boiler method, we are happy with the crock pot.
6. Strain and bottle the now infused oil.
7. Store in a dark, cool place til you need it. But if you are using the fast method, you probably need it quickly.
Please note:
If you are going with the fast method, also be aware that the crock pot can burn the herbal-infused oil if you do not watch it closely. And the double boiler may overheat and boil over.
We have used both methods to make Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil. Both ways worked well for us. We did watch the crock pot carefully to be sure there were no issues with the crocking.
Crock pots are usually a very safe way to cook food as they are designed to be turned on and left by themselves. This holds true for crocking your Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil also but it never hurts to keep an eye on things.
Again, we stress handle Cayenne Pepper with care. Use proper tools and handling techniques.
Now that you have your Homemade Cayenne Pepper Infused Oil, you can move on to using your oil in your herbal remedies.
As with all homemade concoctions, be sure to label your jar with the oil and the spice or herb you are using. Getting your homemade remedies mixed up would be very bad. Imagine, thinking you were making a soothing lip balm but getting mixed up and using cayenne oil instead of beet juice. That would be very bad.
