To make Homemade Dehydrated Sweet Potato Dog Treat Pet Chews you will need:

1. fresh sweet potatoes

2. beef or chicken broth

3. a good knife or veg slicer

4. a solid cutting board

5. a way to dehydrate

1. Start by washing and drying your sweet potatoes.

We buy in bulk from the local farmers market. These sweet potatoes are large and very hard. Make sure you use fresh sweet potatoes, not old, mushy, moldy ones.

2. Cut or slice the sweet potatoes as thin as you can.

Using a knife is hard but it can be done by hand. A veg slicer makes it so much easier. Fresh sweet potatoes are very hard. You will need to put some welly into it if you are cutting by hand or the old fashioned “elbow grease” as they say.

3. Soak your sweet potato slices in a broth to add flavor.

Be careful not to use to much or you will get a very salty sweet potato and that is not healthy for your dog. This step can be skipped if you do not want to add as extra flavor. We normally soak our slices for about 30 minutes. Then remove them from the broth and lay out to dry a bit. You do not want to put dripping wet sweet potatoes into your dehydrator. You can pat them dry with a towel if you want.

We use powdered chicken or beef broth normally. But sometimes we use the cinnamon beef broth. The dogs like it all so there is no worries about our dogs not eating them.

According to some research Cinnamon can help with Diabetic issues. We have a friend with a diabetic dog, she give him the cinnamon broth to help control his blood sugar.

It seems to be working for them.

4. Arrange the sweet potato slices on the dehydrator trays. They can be put on baking pans and put into the oven if you do not have a dehydrator.

Note: A dehydrator is a great investment for any self-sufficient person, prepper, or anyone really who wants to make their own “stuff” with a long shelf life.

Properly stored, dehydrated goods can last for many years. It is not quite as good as freeze drying but it is a close second.

5. Let your sweet potato slices “dry” for at least 24 hours. After one day, check your slices to see if they are ready. If not let them stay another 12 hours and check again. You want your sweet potato slices to be totally dried out, almost to the point of hard as a rock.

If you are going for softer chews, then do not dry them as long. The time depends on what you are wanting to get when the process is done.

Like with most cooking, if you want hard cook longer, if you want soft, cook less. The principal is the same for a dehydrator. If you want hard as a rock, dry them for at least one day, more if needed. If you want soft, leave them in less time.

How long it will take to dry them also depend on how thin or thick you managed to slice your sweet potatoes.
