Today’s talk, DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment Recipe is for those of us who have to fight the flies and gnats to keep our farm animals happy and healthy.
Here on the farm, we have farm animals, horses, donkeys and goats, go figure. As you can imagine, we have to deal with flies bothering the animals, fly strikes to the ears, runny eyes, and all of the ways that flying bugs can pester livestock. As you know from our other talks, we prefer DIY homemade remedies rather than having to buy chemically stuff from the store. For our large farm animals, we have DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment Recipe. We found this recipe online sometime ago and it seems to work very well for us.

To make a DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment Recipe you will need:
1 cup beeswax grated or pellets
2 teaspoons cedar essential oil
2 cups comfrey-infused olive oil
(you can make your own or buy it)
We did a talk some time ago about 3 Ways to Make Comfrey Infused Oil
StarWest Botanicals is our go-to for high-quality essential oils. But when we are gifted essential oils, we use what we have on hand.
1. In a small pot on the stove top, heat the Comfrey infused olive oil.
2. Add the beeswax.
3. Stir until melted and well blended.
4. Add the cedar essential oil to the warm mix. Stir to blend.
5. Pour your ointment into a glass container and let it finish cooling.
Be careful handling the hot liquid. It is best to let it cool a minute or two before handling.
Make sure you have the top on tight or the ointment may dry out. We use a baby food jar or jelly jar to store our ointment. If you use smaller jars you can have more than one, so you can keep one at home and one at the barn and even have one to take with you on outings.
This recipe will leave you with a nice thick ointment that has a woodsy scent.
Be sure to label your ointment so you do not get it mixed up with any other DIY project that looks similar.
To use the DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment:
Apply a thin coat to the ears, legs, belly, and face of your horse, donkey or goat. Be sure not to get it in the eyes. Also, take care not to put it near or above the eyes, where the ointment might melt and drip into the eyes. As they say a little dab will do it. You do not have to lather it on, this ointment does a great job with just a thin coat.
That is all, you have made your own DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment. Now use it on your horse, donkey or goats as needed to keep flies away. This ointment does well on farm dog ears also.
We hope you have enjoyed this talk and we hope you will try your hand at making a DIY Large Farm Animal Fly Repellent Ointment Recipe. Your farm animals will thank you.
