Recently, we told you about the Lekue microwave popcorn maker that we found at Goodwill. We have found another great, if a bit odd item, also at Goodwill. On one of our latest runs to Goodwill, we found The Chip-Tastic potato chip maker.

The Chip-Tastic is another healthy, microwave contraption. You make your own, homemade potato chips. You season your chips to your personal liking. The Chip-Tastic makes potato chips more healthy by not frying in oil or fat.

Steps to use your Chip-Tastic chip maker:

Slice your chips with the included slicer. Be careful not to slice your fingers with the included, handy dandy, very sharp slicer.

Soak your chips in water for a few minutes. This soaking helps release the starch from the potato chip, making the chip more healthy.

Pat your chips dry. We layout a tea towel. We then put the damp chips in between the two folds and let the towel suck up the water.

Useful note, a tea towel works better than a regular hand towel. The smooth tea towel avoids any “towel fur” from the regular cotton towels.

Put your potato slices into your chip tray. It is very important that you get the slices hooked on the hooks at the bottom of the tray slots.

Put your tray into the microwave. The time will vary depending on your microwave and the thickness of your potato slices.

When your chips turn a nice golden brown, they are ready.

Take the chip tray out of the microwave and let the chips cool for a few minutes. The chips will be hot at this point.

When your chips have cooled, take them out of the tray.

Chips will still be a bit soft. As the chips cool they will harden up to the proper crispy texture.

Season your chips to your personal liking. You can add as much or as little seasoning as you want. We have tried our chips with garlic salt and plain. We like to try out different seasonings.

You can season your chip before or after your microwave then. If you want the seasonings to stick to the chips better, you can add the seasoning after you pat the chips dry, just before putting them into the trays. Either way seems to work.

Now enjoy your healthy, homemade potato chips.

As with all new gadgets, we must admit there is a learning curve to getting your chips just right.  But after a few batches, you get it.

This is another odd but great item that most people do not even know exists. With this, you get to make your chips to your own liking. These chips are more healthy than fried potato chips. The Chip-Tastic is another environmentally friendly, multi-use item that makes chip-making quick and easy. Just one more “at home” way to be just a bit more self-sufficient.

If you are interested in getting one yourself, they are available on Amazon.com

As usual, we try to use everything and leave nothing to throw away.   There is a point in the slicing process when your potato is just too thin to use anymore.  When you get to this stage, stop or you may hurt yourself.

The pieces of potato that are too small to use, we put aside and feed to the mealworms.   We did a talk some time ago about how to raise your own mealworms.  Mealworms love potatoes, that is another way to use all of everything.

We hope you have enjoyed this look at another odd but very useful homemaking item.
