Continuing on our self-sufficient talks that we did several months ago, today we will show you a quick and easy recipe on how to make your own homemade deodorant powder dust. This deodorant dust can be used as an underarm deodorant as well as a body powder. It is a very versatile and customizable DIY body powder dust. As we all need deodorant but do not want to use the store-bought chemically stuff, this is a great alternative. It is also cheap to make and easy to put together. You can add the essential oils that you want to make a scent you like.

You will need:

Glass jar

Powder Puff or Brush

1/4 cup baking soda

1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch

15 drops tea tree oil

15 drops lavender oil

you can add other essential oils to make your favorite scent

To mix up a batch:

Pick a jar, glass with a sealing lid would be best.

If you use a plastic container, the essential oils will leach into the plastic and it will not be useable for anything else. If you use a metal container, the oils can make the metal rust. If your lid does not seal, your oils will eventually evaporate and your smell will be gone. You can still use the dust but there will be no scent and no Tea Tree oil to fight bacteria.

Mix the baking soda into your jar. For people that are sensitive to baking soda, you can use a bit less. It is easy to adjust the amount to your needs.

Add the arrowroot powder into your jar. Mix the 2 powders but do not get over-energetic or you will have powder everywhere.

Mix your essential oils into the jar.

We have a couple of Essential Oil companies that we use but StarWest Botanicals is one of our favorites. They offer high-quality essential oils as well as other fine natural products.

Tighten the lid and shake well.

We leave the jar to sit for a week or so, this allows the oils to soak into the powder more evenly.

To use simple dust the powder onto the underarms. It seems to work very well if you apply it to damp underarms after a shower or bath. You can also apply moisturizer to your underarms and then dust. Make sure to cover the whole underarm well. You do not need to cake it up but do use enough to cover. You can also use this deodorant dust in place of your regular body powder. Just dust your underarms and then the rest of your body as usual. If you do not have a puff or a brush, you can use your fingers to spread the deodorant dust.

There you have made your first DIY deodorant dust. You can, of course, experiment with different essential oils to get a scent you like best.

This deodorant dust can be used for men but tweak it for a smell that the man will actually wear.

You can also double the recipe if you need larger amounts as with a family or several girls using from the same jar. In the case of more than one girl, it may be best to make a jar for each girl. This way there will be no fighting and each girl can have her own personal scent.

This is a quick, simple DIY project that the smaller kids can help with. There is little chance of a disaster as you are only using powders and oils.

As with many DIY projects this deodorant dust makes for a great gift. If you know a friend’s preferred smell you can make an essential oil mix. A cute jar and some ribbon or decoration and you have a nice, personalized gift.

We hope you have enjoyed this quick recipe and please do try it out for yourself. You can have a new, personal scent in no time.
