We have been doing a series for some months now on how to start a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Last week we shared some simple recipes using aloe gel. This week we wanted to highlight one of the recipes we like best, this 2 ingredient aloe and rose petal moisturizer.

If you have read any of our talks before, you know we love DIY and using what we already have around the house. In searching for a good moisturizer, we have been through several recipes. Some of the recipes we tried were ok, some not so good, some were gross. We have found a simple recipe that seems to work well for us, the aloe and rose petal moisturizer.

If you harvest your own aloe gel, then you will need to do that before you can start this recipe. You can buy pure aloe gel if you do not have your own plants. Or if you are like us, we have plants but not enough to harvest yet.

For this recipe, we used pure aloe gel that we bought.

There are quite a few rose bushes growing around the place. Some are knock-out roses that seem to bloom year-round no matter what. Some are wild roses and others are antique roses that have been on the farm for several generations. So have no shortage of rose petals. Since we had rose petals on hand, we decided to make use of them when we could.

If you do not have access to fresh roses, you can buy rose oil. StarWest is our go-to for most of our essential oil needs.

You will need:

aloe gel approx 1/4 cup

fresh rose petals 6 flowers or 30 petals

You can, of course, make larger batches.

It is a good thing to note, the larger the batch, the more substance you have to work with, the easier it is to get properly mixed.

Choose fresh, full bloom petals. You do not need the whole flower just the petals.

Wash the rose petals and carefully dry them off. Make sure to wash well. Get off all the pollen, dust, debris, and insects that may be on the rose petals. You do not want to have any allergens or little friends included in your moisturizer.

It seems easier to get the rose petals to chop if you tear them up a bit to start with.

We tried several “blenders” but they were too large and did not get the petals chopped well. We assume if you make very large batches, you will have enough material to use a large blender. The small amount of material in this recipe makes the large machines useless. The blender, the food processor, nor the fruit ninja worked correctly.

A small hand blender is best or you can use a mortar and pestle to get it done.

Whatever method you use, blend or grind rose petals and aloe gel. It may take several “blends” to get it smooth. When you are done you want almost a puree.

To use:

Apply to clean, dry face. Use daily for bright, healthy skin. Gently massage the mix into the skin on the face and neck. If you like fresh, healthy moisturized skin every morning use it as an overnight face mask.

Using this recipe as a daily routine for maintenance, or as a nightly treatment will give you soft, healthy skin.

Several of us in the family have been using this mix for some time and we still love it. The best thing about this recipe is the aloe gel absorbs quickly and does not leave skin sticky or greasy. It is a great moisturizer for the face, neck, hands, arms, and pretty much the whole body.

Be sure to put the leftover mix in an air-tight container.   We keep it in the fridge, it keeps well.

Do note, as with many DIY homemade recipes, it will not be exactly like a store-bought product. With our aloe and rose petal moisturizer, there are small pieces of rose petal in it. It is kind of like, nature glitter.

That is one of the best things about DIY recipes you can adjust them to your personal liking. It is also great that you made it by hand and you know exactly what is in it. And of course, like for us, we can use the materials that we already have on hand. There is the added bonus of using plants that are already growing on the farm as well.

The kids wanted to try sparkly face gel so we added a bit of Today Glitter to the mix. The glitter has no medical use but it was fun. However, Today Glitter is non-plastic, environmentally, kid and pet friendly, which is sort of a medical plus.

There you have an easy, DIY, 2 ingredient  moisturizer. Even if you are making your own aloe gel and picking your rose petals, it takes little time to prepare this recipe and only the 2 ingredients. Again, as we pointed out, we do not have enough aloe to harvest our own yet but we will. If you can not do it all, start with something. Every step is one more move to a more self-sufficient lifestyle. You can be proud of your handmade products, save money, and help the environment all at once.

Please try out this recipe and see for yourself. We are pretty sure you will not be disappointed.
