As you know from our previous talks, this is a family farm. That being said, we work hard and we can get pretty nasty by day’s end, depending on what the day holds for us. So when we are done with our day and need to run a laundry wash, we need a good cleaning soap.

We found a great, DIY, homemade whipped laundry soap recipe from another blogger, the original link is below. This recipe used Fels-Naptha to make a great, deep cleaning, whipped laundry soap. It cleans and gets out all of those unpleasant smells for a fresh set of clothes.

Yes, the clothes will probably be in the same shape the next night but it is always better to start your day out with clean, fresh clothes.

The Fels-Naptha whipped laundry soap has not failed us yet. Below is the original link and our version of the recipe. It takes a little time so you should start a new batch before you are totally out of the current batch.

This blogger gave several variations of this recipe, so you may want to try out the others. But for us, this is the fastest and easiest one. We have been using it for some time and we are very happy with it.

You will need:

1 bar Fels-Naptha cut in half

2 mason jars, smallmouth

1 cup borax

1 cup washing soda (note it is not the same as baking soda)

you can add essential oils of your choice if you want a scent

a blender

To make:

Cut up the Fels-Naptha bar in half.

Then cut each half into small pieces, you can grate it if you like.

Get a clean, dry, smallmouth mason jar.

Place each half in a mason jar. We normally do two mason jars to use the whole Fels-Naptha bar. But you can do just half a bar at a time if you like.

Add 1 1/2 cup boiling water to each jar and put the top on. You may want to leave the top a bit loose, in case the hot water makes the top pop off.

Leave the jars overnight. We usually do not get back to it for several days but that does not seem to matter.

After it sits, the Fels-Naptha will be kind of like jelly in the bottom of the jar. Using a knife, cut or break up the jelly to make it mix easier.

Add 1/2 cup borax to each jar.

Add 1/2 cup washing soda to each jar. ( not baking soda)

Add enough boiling water to each jar to come up to the shoulder of the jar, not up to the neck. Do not overfill or it will make a mess.

You can leave the Fels-Naptha jelly for several days if you can not get back to it right away.

But after you add the borax and washing soda, you are committed. You can not leave the dry mix in the jelly or it will turn to cement and you will never get it mixed.

We know, we did this already. We had to chisel the mess out with a spoon.

You can add essential oils now if you want. We do not always add essential oils but sometimes we like peppermint or lavender.

Next comes the whipping part of the whipped laundry soap.

Take your blender blade fixture and attach it to the jar. If you use small mouth mason jars, the blender blade fixture fits right on and screws down tightly.

Do not use any other size jar or it will not fit and you will throw mix everywhere and possibly break the jar. In short, you could hurt yourself.

You can mix in the blender or a small mouth mason jar and then transfer to the jar of your choice. But it is just easier to start with a small mouth mason jar that way you do not have to do any pouring or spooning after you have the laundry soap whipped.

Make sure you get the gasket set on properly.

Flip your jar over onto the blender and whip your mix for about 1 minute. It should come out like cool whip or creamy mayo.

There you have your homemade whipped laundry soap. If you added essential oils you will have that scent. But if you did not add essential oils, you will still get the nice, clean, scent of the Fels-Naptha.

To use: add 1 tablespoon to your washer load. Yes, that is all you need, 1 tablespoon per load. Just add the soap to the running water, add clothes as usual and leave it to run.

You will get many loads of wash from this soap making. You may be able to make larger batches, but so far we have had no need to try. This recipe makes enough soap to run quite a few laundry loads already.

This recipe may take a day or two to finish but it is well worth the wait.

Try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
