This will be a talk on a DIY project that we recently worked on. We made a night light with a rose, a string of fairy lights, and a plastic craft globe.

You can, of course, use any kind of globe you like, plastic or glass. You do not really even have to use a globe it can be a jar or bottle even. You use whatever items fit the look and theme you are going for.

The same goes for whatever you are putting into your “globe”. I have seen many different items inside the globes. You can use flowers, figures, animal toys, again whatever fits your theme.

For this project, we used a string of fairy lights to make a night light. But if you are not putting it to light, you can use a similar process to make glitter bombs and snowglobes. The only difference being you have to make the globe or jar watertight if you are putting liquid in it. We were not adding water, we wanted a cool night light so we went with the string of fairy lights.

Fairy lights are pretty common in craft stores these days. Fairy lights come in several different styles and have different numbers of lights on them. You can buy fairy lights in Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, at the Dollar Tree, on eBay, on Amazon and I am sure other craft type stores. Just pick the one that fits your style needs. We used the light string with a button, battery pack so it would fit into the base. Light string comes with several different battery styles also and not all will fit your needs so make sure you know what kind you will need for each project.

We used a plastic craft globe for our light. You can get these globes, usually seasonally at the Dollar Tree and other craft stores, but some stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s may carry them year-round. We usually use the ones from the Dollar Tree so we buy several when we can find them and store them up until we want to use them. This globe was plastic with an inner, plastic plug and a plastic screw-on bottom. The plug allows you to seal the globe, if you are adding a liquid to it. Also, the plug and screw bottom have just enough space between them to hold a light switch for the fairy light string. We used an ice pick to put a hole in the plug so we could thread the fairy light string up into the globe through the bottom. As I pointed out, the space between the plug and the screw on bottom was enough to put the light string battery switch into.

We took a fake rose, the kind from the Dollar Tree bouquet to put inside our globe. It was originally a white rose but that was not the look we were going for so we painted it black. We are very fond of spray paint. It is easy to get a unique pattern with spray paint. We then painted the leaves that came with the rose. We used a hot glue gun to secure the rose to the leaves and the leaves to the plastic plug. To finish the look, we added a bit of black fabric around the bottom of the rose to cover the glue. A couple of dots of hot glue and all is secure and ready. Be sure to take caution with the hot glue gun, it can cause a bad burn if you get hot glue on your hand.

After the glue was cooled and set we laced the light string around the rose and did the best we could to arrange it into the globe around the top. We did not get the light in the exact placement that we wanted but it seems there is a learning curve to controlling your fairy light. Then we put the rose into the globe top and pushed the plug into place. With the hole in the plug, the battery switch is snuggled into the base. All you have to do is unscrew the bottom and switch on the lights then put the bottom back on. This method makes it easy to turn the lights on and off and replace batteries when needed.

As we were going for a cool Goth looking, night light, we used the black rose and black fabric. But again, you can use anything inside the globe that you want, any theme, color, or figure as long as it fits into your globe. You can add glitter, foam puffs, sequins, confetti, or any number of other things to add bling to your globe. Again, if you want to add water and not lights, you can make a water globe or glitter bomb using the same method. If you are adding water, obviously do not put a hole in the plug to run the lights into. Add your theme, colors, bling, and water, then seal the plug with hot glue or silicon to make it watertight.

Light globes are another great, hand made, unique craft item that takes only a few parts and a little time. You can make a perfect gift for any occasion by matching your colors, theme, and inside the figure, to the person, you are making it for. People love hand made gifts, it gives items a personal, special touch. As with most DIY projects, there is a world of possibilities, just use your imagination. We hope this gives you some ideas for your next project.
