As you know, we love homemade cooking. We also love DIY recipes. Also, we love garlic. So today we give you a recipe for how to make your own DIY Garlic Salt.
There are two general ways to make your own DIY homemade Garlic Salt, we will give you both. The process for both ways is very similar, it is only the handling of the garlic that is different.
Garlic is one of the most used herbs/spices/plants. Many people use it daily, as we do. Garlic is a cooking wonder. And is rumored to have excellent medical benefits.
Though there are very few actual proven medical benefits, garlic has quite a few “folk benefits”.
1. Garlic is high in nutrients and low in calories.
3. Can help lower high blood pressure
4. Can help lower cholesterol.
5. Is said to help with fatigue.
6. May help with bone loss.
7. Garlic was said, in ancient times, to improve stamina.
8. Garlic is said to help protect against illness.
Again, these “benefits” may not be proven by science but many people swear by the health benefits of garlic and use it every day.
If you love garlic salt or garlic and herb salts you know buying these blends can get expensive. More so if you have a large family or if you use garlic with just about every meal. So you may want to consider making your own garlic salt and garlic salt blends.
Please note, strong garlic can be overwhelming. Too much or too strong garlic can cause eye irritation, as well as runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and coughing.
There are some people who are allergic to garlic. So be sure before you start playing around with it, that you are not allergic.
Garlic is also contraindicated with some medications so be sure to check on that if you are taking medications.
Making your own garlic salt and garlic salt blend is pretty easy and in the long run much cheaper than store-bought. There is the added benefit of homemade foods, where you know what it is and what is in them.
As we said, there are two ways to make your own DIY homemade Garlic Salt, the end result is different but both are wonderful to cook with.
In process 1 the garlic is dehydrated and ground fine before being added to the salt.
For process 2, the garlic is chopped but not dehydrated, it is left fresh when added to the salt. We will give you the steps for both.
To make your own DIY Homemade Garlic Salt you will need
fresh garlic cloves
salt
a good strong constitution
a sealed container
a good knife
a cutting board
a way to dehydrate your garlic
Process #1 Make your own DIY Homemade Garlic Salt
1. Peel and separate the cloves.
2. Wash and dry the garlic.
3. Slice the garlic very thin. You can do this by hand or with a food processor. A hand slicer will work also.
Be aware that being this close to garlic and handling it may cause some personal irritation.
4. Dry in a dehydrator or in the stove. A dehydrator outside would be best. Fresh garlic heating in the stove can really be strong inside.
5. Powder the dry garlic in a blender, food processor, or by hand with a mortal and pestle. We recommend a blender, this keeps the garlic sealed away from you while you are working with it.
6. Put the garlic powder into the prepared container. Glass is best as plastic will absorb the garlic odor and keep it forever. As is true with many of the strong spices and herbs.
7. Add salt and mix well. Here you can go with regular salt or sea salt, it is just what you prefer. Or what you have on hand.
8. Keep the garlic salt in a sealed container to keep it fresh.
You can also add different herbs and spices to make your own special blend.
Process #2 Make your own DIY Homemade Garlic Salt
1. Peel and separate the cloves.
2. Wash and dry the garlic.
3. Chop the garlic very thin and small. You can do this by hand or with a food processor. A hand slicer will work also.
Be aware that being this close to garlic and handling it may cause some personal irritation.
4. Put the garlic straight into the prepared container. Try to keep as much of the juice with the chopped garlic as you can.
5. Add salt and mix well. A few vigorous shakes should do it.
6. Keep the garlic salt in a sealed container in the fridge to keep it fresh. Unlike process one, process two garlic will go bad much more quickly as it is not dried at all.
As with process one, you can use sea salt or regular salt. With this process, the fresh garlic juice will saturate the salt. This makes for a very strong, moist garlic salt.
You can add different herbs and spices to make your own special blend. But note, whatever other herbs you choose will be saturated with fresh garlic juice, and that may slightly change the final flavor.
And it is just that simple to make your own DIY garlic salt or garlic herb salt.
If you want to experiment, you can add all kinds of other herbs and spices to get just the flavor you want. Of course, changing the amount of salt, garlic, and herbs will also change the end result. But adding in different herbs and spices will give you a unique blend to suit your taste.
