1. Reason for each ingredient:
The ingredients are chosen for several reasons and each performs a certain function.
We want the udder soft, and pliable so we use coconut oil, and olive oil to start with. Coconut oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and softening. Coconut oil also is nourishing to the skin.
Olive oil, by itself, is also nourishing to the skin. However, our olive oil is infused with Plantain leaf. Plantain has antibacterial properties. No, not the banana kind, the medical plant kind. This will help keep the udder healthy and keep infection out.
Shea Butter is very hydrating and will dissolve with body heat. It is quickly and easily absorbed into the skin.
The essential oils were chosen for specific reasons also.
Lavender has antibacterial properties and it is soothing to the skin.
Rosemary, Citronella, and Frankincense have a heavy scent and are good bug repellents.
The beeswax helps seal the skin to keep moisture in and dirt out.
2. DIY Whipped Herbal Udder Balm Recipe:
1 Cup Beeswax
½ Cup Coconut Oil
½ Cup Shea Butter
1/2 Cup of Plantain Infused Olive Oil
35 drops of Essential Oils
Essential Oils:
10 drops of Lavender calming, antibacterial
10 drops of Rosemary bug repellant
10 drops of Citronella bug repellent
5 drops of Frankincense bug repellant
StarWest Botanicals is our go-to for high-quality essential oils.
3. To make DIY Whipped Herbal Udder Balm:
Heat on low to melt the oils and wax, high heat is not needed.
1. On the stovetop, heat the Plantain Infused Olive Oil.
We did a talk some time ago about How to Make Plantain Infused Oil. This is the medical herb, not the banana.
2. Add the coconut oil and stir to melt.
3. Mix in the Shea Butter.
4. Melt the beeswax into the warm mix.
It is best to add the beeswax slowly or it may clump and take longer to melt.
5. Take off heat.
6. Add in the essential oils and continue to mix.
7. Continue to stir while the mix cools.
8. Once the mix is cool enough to handle but not set, whip it.
We use a small, electric hand mixer but you can use a whisk it you like. It does take a bit to get a good smooth whip.
9. Store the DIY Whipped Herbal Udder Balm in a clean, container.
We use glass jars with a wide mouth to make it easy to scoop out a bit with your hand.
This recipe does make for a thick, somewhat sticky udder balm. Do consider the outside temp when you store it. If it is too cool out the udder balm will harden up. If it is too hot the udder balm may melt. If the udder balm get hot and melts, we oils may separate and you will need to whip it again to get them blended.
Also note, you do not need to slather this udder balm on, a little bit will go a long way. It also will leave your hands well-hydrated and soft. This recipe is a bit too much for a hand cream but if you have chapped hands, this will do the job for you and your cow. On a side note, it smells good too, not that like medical smelling, store-bought stuff.
So there you have DIY Whipped Herbal Udder Balm. Yes, you could just buy an udder balm from the farm supply. But do you really know what is in it? And why buy when you can make your own? One more small step to a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Of course, if you have a milk cow you have started this journey already.
We hope you have enjoyed this DIY Whipped Herbal Udder Balm recipe and that you will try it for yourself.
