Today we are sharing a recipe that we came up with ourselves after some intense research and testing, DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray.
If you live in the south and if you have farm animals, you have to fight flies. We have tried many different commercial fly sprays but were not happy with either the results, the chemicals, or both. So we did some research and found several fly recipes online using essential oils and safe ingredients. What do you do now that you have the info? You experiment. We do have to admit, we tried several other recipes but finally got a combo that works well and smells great.
A good-smelling fly spray is a plus as we not only have to spray the cow but also have to get really close while milking her. There are few things worse than having to hug a cow’s belly while milking and holding your breath due to the stink of a chemical fly spray.

When you are ready to use the DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray:
5. In a sprayer bottle measure 1 quart/4 cups/32oz. These are all the same amount depending on what you use.

6. Mix 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda into the quart of water and give it a shake.

7. Add 1oz/1/8 of a cup of the DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray concentrate to the mix.

8. Secure the top and shake very well to mix all the ingredients into the water.

To use the DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray:
9. Liberally spray your cow with the DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray. Be sure to get the belly and legs. Do not spray into the cow’s face. We use a rag to wipe the spray around the cow’s face as not to get it into her eyes.

Avoid spraying the DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray onto the cow’s udder. You do not want to add that to the milk. It is common practice to wash and dry the cow’s udder before milking so if you do get a little bit on the udder it should be washed off before starting to milk.
Do not use the concentrate straight as the spray, it will be too strong and may burn the cow’s skin or make the cow sick.
If your cow is dirty or shedding you may need to give her a good brushing before you spray her to be sure the spray gets down to the skin.
This DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray has worked very well for us this summer. Popi sprayed it directly onto a horsefly that was on Daisey’s back and the horsefly just dropped dead.
Of course, you will need to reapply the spray every few days and after it rains. But this recipe is safe enough to use every day if you have a real fly issue.

Oh, and did we mention, that the mix of essential oils makes this DIY Large Animal Essential Oil Fly Spray smell so good? It makes your cow smell like one of those old-fashioned, herbal scent packs like your Grandmother had in her chest of drawers but in a good way.
It can also be used on your farm dogs if they have fly strike. Do use a rag to wipe the spray around the dog’s face, head, and ears if you are using it on the dog. You should be able to spray directly on the rest of the dog’s body.
