As we have mentioned before in our talks, we like to hand-make our own products here on the farm. We have, for example, done talks on making bath salts and bath bombs for a unique bath time experience. We have now moved on to lip balm. We like to try new things in new and different ways, so why should our lips be left out? As you know by now, we use only environmentally safe ingredients for all our DIY items. There are different recipes for making many variations of lip balms, just like there are for any DIY item that you may want to try out. We like to start with a simple, basic recipe to be sure we like the end product. After you have mastered the basic form, then you can branch out into more elaborate products. But it is always a good idea to start with a general and simple process first. We have found a fairly quick and simple way to make our own lip balm. Below is the recipe we use and the latest lip balm we have made.

You will need:

containers for the end product. Containers are all the rage and you can make your lip balm as plain or blinged-out as you like.

You can use small pots, re-purposed tubes, or larger pots, depending on what you plan to do with your lip balm. You can use cute seasonal or theme containers or simple clear ones. It is up to you and your imagination.

Ingredients:

2 Tb Shea Butter

3 Tb Beeswax if you use a block it is easier to use if you grate it up first. You can also use pellets.

4 Tb Coconut, Almond, or Olive Oil. We use coconut oil.

Essential Oil, StarWest Botanical, about 15 drops or Flavor Oil, add to your taste but about 20 drops should give a nice light flavor. We use essential oils for a nice scent and flavor.

You can also use jello to give it color and flavor. Pick the jello that you want, we use 2 teaspoons for a light hint of color and flavor. You can use more to your liking.

Food coloring is also an option if you are going for a bolder color. Just remember, food coloring can stain.

You can also give your balm flashy bling with Today Glitter, eco-glitter. Today Glitter is safe to add to any DIY cosmetics. It is kid-safe, pet-safe, and environmentally friendly.

This recipe will give you a firm end product. If you want it to be softer add another teaspoon of oil to give it a smoother texture.

Once you decide on what flavor, color, glitter, and texture you want to make, the process is fairly simple.

For our lip balm, this time we choose to use coconut oil with the beeswax and shea butter. We added raspberry jello for flavor. We decided we wanted to try something new so we added some teal Today Glitter and a drop of green food coloring to our mix. As you can see in the pics, we came up with a gray, sparkly lip balm with a sheen of green. It gives a nice Gothic look to the balm. I know, it looks odd but the kids loved it. To use, run your finger across the lip balm and you should get just a bit of gloss on your finger to rub on your lips. The balm has a firm texture but goes on smoothly. Your lips get a hint of flavor, a smooth gloss, and a glittery finish.

Melt the base ingredients together. You can melt the beeswax, shea butter, and oil either in the microwave or stovetop. Microwave is quicker but be sure to heat in short increments and stir well often. On the stovetop, stir constantly. When all is melted and mixed well, take off the heat.

At this point, you mix in your essential oil or flavor oil, mix well into the melted oil mix. If you are using jello for flavor and color, mix about 2 teaspoons jello into the heated mix. Check to see if it is the color want, you can add a bit more jello if needed. But work quickly as it will set as it cools. This is also the point you add the eco-glitter if you are making your lip balm flashy.

Once you have the color and flavor you want, carefully pour the mixture into the containers you have ready. Again, be careful as the mix is still very warm. Wait until the containers are completely cool before testing.

Again, this should give you a firm balm that smooths on easily with your fingertip. Try it out and see how you like making your own lip balm. You can use any combo of flavor, color, glitter, texture, or scent you want. Use your imagination and you can come up with anything your little heart desires. Make it your way to your taste or theme. Or if you are thinking of someone else, make it to their likes. Lip balm is another hand made item that makes a great gift. The options are endless, have fun, and experiment. You can make one for every season and occasion if you like.

We hope you have enjoyed this visit and hope it encourages you to try your hand at hand-making your own lip balm.
