We farmers do not do much going-out-on-the-town or parties but from time to time a bit of dress up is required. There are band concerts both marching and concert, chior concerts, Church band singings, home comings, proms, and the occasional date night, though that is rare. And sometimes you just want to get dolled-up a bit. Hair fixing is one of those, who does that and when do you have time for that? Well we are here to make your “hair fixing” a little bit easier with this DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe.

This recipe requires three ingredients, four if you want good smellies, a bit of boiling time, and a few kitchen tools.

To make DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe you will need:

2 cups of water

1 orange or lemon

3 Tablespoons of Vodka

6 drops of Essential oils (optional)

Sprayer bottle

This picture shows the ingredients for the DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe. There is a bottle of Vodka, an orange, a cheese cloth, a measuring cup and a funnel.

You may want to have a cheese cloth or nut bag on hand as well as a measuring cup, a glass bowl or two and a funnel, unless you have a very steady hand to pour.

To make your DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe:

1. Clean and cut the orange or lemon into wedges.

It is best to use organic to be sure you will not be adding chemicals and pesticides to your hair spray.

2. Add two cups of water to a stovetop pot.

As we have a country well, we use tap water but if you have city water, you may want to go with distilled or purified water.

3. Add the orange or lemon wedges to the water.

It is a best practice to use oranges for dark hair and lemons for very light hair.

4. In a stovetop pot boil the orange or lemon wedges.

This does take some time, approx 20 minutes.

5. Boil until you have reduced the liquid to about 1 cup.

6. Let the juice cool before moving to the next step.

Generally, we use a potato masher to squeeze all the goodie out of the orange or lemon wedges. Squeezing by hand will work just be sure the liquid is cool first.

7. Using a juice bag or cheese cloth strain the liquid into a glass bowl.

If you have less than 1 cup, add enough warm water to make up the difference.

8. Add the 3 Tablespoons of Vodka.

If you are adding essential oils to this mix you will want to mix the Vodka and essential oils in a bowl then add that mix to the orange or lemon mixture.

9. Stir to mix well.

10. Pour the mix into a sprayer bottle.

If you have a very steady hand you may be able to do this just by just pouring from the cup into the sprayer. But for those of us who do not have hands that are all that steady or have stigmatisms a funnel is best.

As you can see in the picture we use an old glass sprayer. Yes, glass is not as common but you can find them. The acidity of the orange will eventually eat the plastic of the plastic sprayers and the inside parts. It may rust the metal sprayer but it does work longer. You can extend the life of the metal sprayer by washing it well when it is empty.

To use your DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe, shake well then spray like any other hair spray.

Of course, do not forget to put a label on your hair spray.

This DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe will give you a soft hold, not a firm cement. In our experience this hair spray does not get sticky or gum up your hair. It will wash out easily on your next wash and not leave any residue.

It also should be noted, it is best to use oranges for dark hair and lemons for light hair.  Lemons can bleach your hair if you are not careful and get into the sun with lemon on your hair.

This is the recipe card for the DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe. The title is in bold black at the top. There is an ingredients list, step-by-step section, and a how to use part. There is a picture of the finished product at the top right under the title. The background is a bright, multi-colored, Mexican blanket style in bold orange, green, yellow, blue, and purple.

And there you have your very own, homemade DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe. No chemicals, no processing, no colors or smells that you did not want in it. Of course, if you add essential oil, you will get a scent from that. You can mix and match to get the exact scent you like or go with just the natural citrus scent. There will not be an overwhelming smell to this hair spray anyway.

The addition on the Vodka will help preserve your hair spray for some time but in small batches like this, it is used up pretty quickly. You can make larger batches if you need a lot at one time, say for a school dance or girls night party. Just remember to keep the ratio the same when you double the recipe. With so few ingredients, it is a quick and easy thing to manage.

We hope you have enjoyed this DIY Soft Hold Hair Spray Recipe. Try it out and see how easy it is to make. You may never go back to store-bought hair spray again.
