As with many things, this year 2020 has changed the way we look at things and how we buy things. We have always made many of the items we use every day here on the farm but as of this year, we have increased our homemade items to cover most of our personal needs as well. We are now making mouthwash, tooth powder, hand sanitizer, and a number of other personal use items. It just seems safer and more practical to buy the base, natural ingredients in bulk, and make our own. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to be prepared and to think ahead. Gone are the days of running out of something and just dashing to town for a quick pick up. With the new safety requirements for 2020, mask, hand sanitizer, at least 6 ft clearance from others, do not cough, do not breath on others, and do not let others breath on you, it is just too frustrating to go into public places. Some of us were introverts to start with so all of these extra details are just not worth it. I know everyone has had these issues and one simple way to help take out some of the times needed in public is to buy bulk and make your own. With bulk buying, you have a large amount on hand so it is easy to make more when you find you are getting low. Also, most of the time, bulk pricing is lower cost than one time buys, like in the stores. We also like that we can have most everything delivered directly to our door now, as opposed to having to get off the property and go to town.

We have decided to do something useful for our readers in a series of talks on making your own DIY personal use items. This series of talks will hopefully help you learn how to be more self-sufficient and help you save some money and time on town outings.

Here on the farm, we work outside most days with gardens, farm animals, orchards, fence repair, housework, rescue dogs and so many other things during the day. We get hot and sweaty as usual with manual labor. It is nice to have a way to keep fresh and dry while still working. DIY body powder is a quick and easy way to do this. It is also a great way to make yourself a personal scent. The body powder helps keep your skin dry and chafe-free. A nice scent is always a good alternative to smelling like a warthog and we all know there are days like that. Making your own body powder can be fun and is easy to do. Even the kids like picking the way they want to smell.

you will need:

1. A container to hold your powder. Glass containers work best but in a pinch, plastic and metal will do. You can use all kinds of cute, colored, or themed containers.

2. Corn Starch or Arrow Root powder. You can use either, we use corn starch. DO NOT USE baking soda, it will burn your skin.

3. Scent of your choice. You can use essential oils, herbs or if you have a special perfume that you want to use, that will work also. We use StarWest essential oils for this project as we do for all of our DIY projects that require oils.

4. You will need some tools: mixing bowl, funnel, whisk, or spatula, depending on which method you use. If you use leaf herbs, you will need a mortar and pestle.

There are several ways to make you DIY body powder. They are all basically the same but have some slight changes depending on which way you go with it.

You can use either corn starch or arrowroot powder,  your choice.

No matter which method you decide to use, you will need a container and the essential oils of your choice.

Method one: Take your container, add the powder you chose. Take a cotton ball or cotton pad and soak with your favorite essential oil or perfume. Put the cotton ball into the container with the powder, put the top on, and wait. Within a few days the powder will soak up the oils or perfume and you will have scented powder.

Method Two: Pick your essential oils and powder. Put your powder into your container and add the essential oil drops directly to the powder. You will need to shake or mix the container. Then just put the top on and wait.

Method Three: Pick your dried herbs and layer them into the container with the powder you chose. Then put the top on.  Again, in a few days, you will have scented powder. The dried herbs can be a bit odd when you put the powder on your body so be aware of that. You can also use whole, herb leaves to avoid the dry herb mess. If you use whole leaves, be sure to crush or bruise the leaves a bit to release the oils from the leaf.

Method Four: Take an empty or mostly empty perfume or oil bottle, do not wash it out. Add the powder directly into the bottle. Then put the top on and wait. The powder will soak up any perfume or oils left in the bottle and you will have your scented powder. You can keep it in the original bottle if you like.

There you have made your own body powder. As with most DIY, you can specialize your body powder to your specific desire. You can dress up the container to whatever color or theme you like. You can make seasonal scents. You can add glitter to your body powder to get all the bling you want. We, of course, recommend Today Glitter. Today Glitter is plastic-free, completely bio-degradable, environmentally friendly as well as kid, pet and cosmetic friendly.

Today Glitter now comes in multiple size glitter pieces as well as in many different colors and shines.

You can make your body powder as individual as you are. You can make several different ones and have a different smell for every day or one for every day and one for special occasions. Homemade body powder also makes for great gifts. With that special person in mind, you can tailor the powder and the container specifically to them. Have fun and experiment, see how much fun you can have making your own body powder. And as an added bonus, body powder is a great thing to keep on hand for personal use. If you live in a hot, humid area, you know what I mean. Of course, in winter or cold areas, all those layers of clothes can get sweaty and chaffy also. We hope you have enjoyed this talk and enjoy making your own body powder.
