As we talked about last week, we are doing a series of talks on DIY personal use items. Last week we gave you the steps and recipes for homemade body power. This week it is a homemade mouth wash.

If you are like us, we do not like commercial mouthwashes. I guess we have sensitive mouths but the mouthwash we used to buy at the store burned our mouths and lips. We have gone to making our own mouthwash, using essential oils and other natural ingredients. We like the fact that we know what is in it and that we can make it to our own taste. We also appreciate that our mouthwash does not have alcohol and other unnameable chemicals. We can make our own mouth wash without the trademark burn of regular mouthwash. Of course, if you have a heavy hand with the essential oils, you can make your mouthwash too strong and again get that unwanted burn. But if you do it right, your mouth wash will be cleaning, tasty and non-burning. The kids even like to pick out their own flavors. There are so many different ways to mix and match essential oils. You can get almost any flavor you want, with a bit of home chemistry and some testing.

Of course, it is important to buy and use high-quality ingredients or you will come out with a poor finished product. So, as always, we use StarWest essential oils for our natural homemade recipes. StarWest is still our favorite and most trusted when it comes to essential oils, loose-leaf herbs, and things of that nature. They also offer a great selection of herbal teas, if you drink tea.

You will need a few things to start off making your own mouth wash but the process is very simple.

You will need:

a bottle for your finished product

water Some recipes I have seen, call for distilled water but we have a country well so our water is very good, we use it straight from the tap.

baking soda

essential oils

It is really that simple: put the water into the bottle, add the baking soda, add the essential oils of your choice, put the top on the bottle and shake to mix. As I said before, you can mix to your taste. There are some essential oils that are more benificial to cleaning your mouth and you will want to add these but as for added flavor, it is up to you.

You will need a clean bottle. We use recycled glass bottles that way we can use all the glass bottles we save. Here you can see we used an old fashioned cork to top off the bottle. You can use normal screw-on tops also, it is to your liking. But do remember you will need to swirl or shake before use so make sure your top will stay on.

So here is our homemade mouthwash recipe:

water 1 or 2 cups depending on the size of your bottle

1 teaspoon baking soda (helps the oils mix into the water and helps freshen your breath.)

10 drops of Thieves oil (already includes clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils. These are all cleaning oils.)

10 drops of peppermint oil (cleans and freshens breath.)

You can add 10 drops of your favorite other oil if you like for taste.

Fill your bottle half with water, add the baking soda and swirl around to mix. Then add your oils. Finish filling the bottle with water put the top on and mix.

Remember to give a good mix before each use. You can now gargle, swish, and rinse with your new, homemade mouth wash. Just do remember to swish and spit, DO NOT SWALLOW, essential oils are not to be swallowed.

You can try out different oils to see what tastes you like and what you do not. You can use some food flavorings also but the combo of tastes may not be very good and you really do not need more flavor with the essential oils. Always be sure to add only a few drops of new oil at a time and taste test. You do not want to add too much at once and make something you can not stand to use and have to throw the whole thing out.

So here is a new project for you and it is a family-friendly project so the whole family can get involved with little chance of disaster. Making your own mouth wash may not seem like a big step but it is rewarding as any DIY project that makes your household just a bit more self-sufficient. And it is good for your health so what do you have to lose? We hope you try out making your own mouthwash at home. With the ease of making mouthwash, each family member can have their own bottle and own personal flavor. I am not sure how someone will take it if you give them a homemade mouthwash as a gift, not sure what you are saying there. But as with most DIY projects, you can dress up the bottles to make a cute themed gift. You can also make the mouthwash to a certain person’s preference on taste. Again, not sure how well mouth wash as a gift would be received but it is doable.
