To start with, consider how many times a day or week you use your wooden kitchen tools. How often do you cook with them and, hopefully, wash them afterward? The heat from the cooking, the hot water, and the soap all take a toll on the wood. You may have noticed your wooden kitchen tools, especially old ones, are dry, cracked, or even brittle.
We are talking about wooden kitchen tools, but this recipe can be used on any kind of wooden tool. Yes, we know that there are not all that many wooden tools made and used these days, and that is a shame, but some of us still use them on the farm and in the garden. Some fishing tools, leatherworking tools, carving tools, and sewing tools, among others, are still made of wood.
We have some wooden kitchen tools that have been in the family kitchen for several generations, and we still use them. They are old and worn, but they still work.
Just like metal tools, wooden ones need cleaning and moisturizing to keep them healthy. Keeping your wooden tools moisturized and in good condition will help them last for a very long time. Unless you drop them into the bottom of the stove, because they will catch on fire, we know.
DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe Ingredients:
¾ cup of coconut oil
4 Tablespoons of beeswax
15 drops of essential oils (optional but helpful)
To make a DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe:
1. In a stovetop pot, warm ¾ cup of coconut oil. This can be either solid or liquid. If you use liquid, you may need to add a bit more beeswax to get the consistency you want. But having your DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe a bit soft will not hurt anything when it comes to applying it.
2. Melt in 4 Tablespoons of Beeswax.
You can melt the beeswax first but in out experience, beeswax melt faster in an already warm oil.
3. Remove from heat and let cool a bit.
4. At this point, you can add in some essential oils if you like. They are not required, but they will help nourish the wood. If you are going to use essential oils, stir in 15 drops of the essential oil of your choice.
Using an essential oil in the citrus family will not only add some antibacterial benefits, but will make it smell really good too. Lemon, lime, grapefruit, or orange are good choices, but you could add Lavender or Rosemary for a different scent.
5. Carefully pour the DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe into prepared containers and let it sit to cool.
6. Once totally cooled, cover with lids and label the tins.
To use the DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe:
1. Wash and allowing the wooden tool to dry.
2. Apply a small amount of the DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe.
3. Gently rub the DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe into the wooden tool.
4. Allow to sit for about 30 minutes to absorb.
5. Rub with a clean cloth.
6. Store your wooden kitchen tools until next use.
And that is all. As we said, making a DIY Wooden Tool Rescue Paste Recipe is a very simple process, but a very important one for your wooden tools. After using this recipe several times, you will start to notice that the tools are softer and have more luster than before.
If you have old wooden tools that are already very dry and damaged, it may take several times to start to see improvement. Keeping tools in good shape in the first place is always better than trying to fix them later. But good, old-fashioned wooden kitchen tools are wonderful to work with and can last a long time if you take care of them.
Of course, if you have old, rotten, cracked, broken, or even dog-chewed wooden tools, this will not fix that. This recipe is not a miracle cure for all things wood; it is a rescue paste. But something must still be at least partially alive to be able to be rescued.
On a side note: You may remember we did a talk some time ago for a DIY All-In-One Leather Conditioner, Polish, and Sealer. While we had the wooden kitchen tools out, we decided to do the knife handles and the leather sheaths. Keeping your knife handles and leather sheaths in good shape is as important as keeping a sharp blade.
