For those of us who use mason jars, cleaning them can be difficult. You know those places that are hard to reach, the bottom corners, the top under the mouth rings, etc. Well, there is an easy, quick, and painless way to clean those areas with Quick Tip #1: Cleaning Mason Jars with an Old Paint Roller.
The steps are really very simple:
1. Quickly wash out the jar with soap and warm water.
2. Wet an old paint roller with soap and water.
3. Push the old paint roller into the mason jar. You will find it fits both wide-mouth and small-mouth mason jar-type glass jars.
4. Run the roller around inside the glass jar. It fits into all of those hard-to-get-to spots and gets them clean.
5. Rinse the jar. If there is still some “stuff” in the jar, repeat the cleaning process.
6. Clean the outside of the jar. You can use the same old paint roller or any other cleaning tool to wash and scrub the outside of the jar.
7. Rinse the jar with clean, warm water and set it aside to dry.
8. Rinse out the old paint roller and set it aside to dry. The roller is now ready for the next time you need it.

No more scraping your hand trying to get it into the jar. No more looking for something with a long enough handle to get a sponge or cloth down into the jar and strong enough to scrub with. Just run the paint roller into the jar and rub it around. An old paint roller is strong enough to take the scrubbing, fits into the jar, and can get into the corners and ridges.
We use an old paint roller to clean out the water and food jar for the young chickens, as well as the water jar for the ferret. We keep an old paint roller on the corner of the sink in the workroom so we have it when we need it.
Pretty much any glass jar with a wide mouth or a small mouth, as you use for canning and preserving, can be cleaned with a paint roller.
So next time you are painting, wash out the paint roller and keep it for cleaning glass jars. Of course, the roller works best if it is relatively paint-free, but old dry paint on the roller can help scrub the jars clean, sort of like a sand scrub.
